1- Know your motivations!
Are you traveling for leisure or work?
If for leisure: do you want to rest during this period, do you want to walk to sightseeing, what do you mainly want to do? Think wisely, once after choosing New York to spend your vacations, you cannot complain about not having time to sleep in this period!
If for work: nothing is better than unifying both good things in only one trip! If you are science-majoring, take in consideration some high-tech places, as South Korea or Germany, for example. Look for courses, congresses, and have fun while improving your career!

2- Calculate your savings!
If you don't have much money to spend, try to visit countries nearby your place; This way, you can save some money from the airplane ticket (which can be quite expensive sometimes...). Besides, know how much you will spend by day in the country is very useful to calculate your expenses (Use this website to have an idea of how much you will spend by day in your destination: http://www.budgetyourtrip.com/ )
3- Calculate your time!
Be aware of how much time do you have to spend in your vacations! To go from South Korea to Brazil, for example, it takes 2 days to go and more 2 days to come back. If your vacations is a 1 week period, better think in a closer destination.
4- Know who you are traveling with!
If you are traveling with kids, crowded cities such as Beijing maybe are not a good option. Also, if you are with elderly people, better not choosing a place that requires long time walking, as Paris for example. If your partner doesn't like hot temperatures, Thailand is out of the question.
5- Be aware of your limitations!
If you have never traveled abroad, start small! Don't plan your first trip in a tight schedule to many countries in Europe, for example. Also, know your language limitation. It can be really frustrating not being able to communicate.
6- Make your dreams come true!
If you always dreamed about visiting London, and if you have money, time, courage, and will to adventure yourself in a different place and a different culture, why not?
7- Moreover...
~No matter where or why you travel... There is always one wonderfull reason to be found!~~
